Case examples of unexpected and possible emergency scenarios facing the equine veterinarian will be presented. Discussion will include management, transportation, and the decision making process for referral or other options.

Stephanie Caston, DVM, DACVS-LA grew up in southeast Texas. She completed undergraduate studies at McNeese State University and attended Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine. After a surgical residency at Iowa State University, she spent 2 years as an emergency surgeon. Dr. Caston is currently an Associate Professor and co-section head in equine surgery at Iowa State College of Veterinary Medicine. She enjoys the busy caseload at ISU as well as clinical, lab, and classroom teaching. Her current research and clinical interests include equine skin tumors, lameness, and veterinary education. She also has a small boarding, training, and sales farm. Dr. Caston competes own horses in eventing and fox hunts during the winter months.
