Cannabinoids 101 & Their Potential Efficacy in Veterinary Medicine

This lecture will highlight the recent interest in hemp and hemp-related nutraceuticals, with a focus on the bioactives in hemp, particularly the most prominent cannabinoids, including cannabidiol, cannabidiolic acid, cannabigerol, and other derivatives. An examination of the most prevalent medical indications, including anxiety, osteoarthritis, inflammatory conditions, and neuroprotection, and their translational potential to companion animals will be covered. Further examination of use of human products in cancer management and recent work on canine cancer cell biology and clinical cancer management will also be highlighted.

Dr. Elam comes from the University of Florida (UF) College of Veterinary Medicine. There, she concurrently obtained her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Master of Public Health degrees, and stayed on to complete a specialty internship in Integrative Medicine and a residency in Canine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Elam served as faculty at UF from 2016 until 2020, when she joined CSU. She is additionally certified in veterinary acupuncture through the Chi Institute. In her free time, she enjoys cooking; hiking with her cattle dog mix, Panda; hanging out with her three cats, Monkey, Fennec and Dee; and finding new places to enjoy good food and co‑ee with her husband, Josh.
